Community Computer Centres

BOSASA Giving Back through our Community Computer Centres

BOSASA stands firm in the belief that we must give back to the communities in which we operate. This belief forms a part of our corporate and social responsibility. We’ve therefore made a commitment to programmes that will make the average South African more employable.

One of the ways BOSASA has done this is by setting up and running multiple community computer centres spread across the country.

The BOSASA Community Computer Centres can Change Lives

  • The BOSASA Youth Centre network – People often take for granted the opportunities that they’ve been afforded. Being privy to the technological advancements of the 21st century isn’t always commonplace in Africa. BOSASA stresses the importance of this knowledge to all South Africans, which is why, as part of our youth centre network; we have an established community computer centre network. These facilities may be  made available to associated communities within Youth Centre geographic locations.

  • The Westonaria Community Computer Centre – This centre is situated in the small mining town of Westonaria just outside Gauteng, which in recent years has suffered greatly with many of the mine workers losing their jobs. BOSASA saw the need for these people to be given access to further education in order to make them more employable. This led to us creating the community computer centre offering computer literacy classes from beginner to advanced, free of charge. The centre was equipped with 50 new computers and was opened to the members of the mining community and their children. This was an excellent solution to their skills deficit and has resulted in improved abilities and better employment opportunities for these people.

  • The Fezeka High School Computer Centre – BOSASA chose to come to the aid of Fezeka High School in Gugulethu, Cape Town after we were made aware of their situation by Baleka Mbete. Studies have shown that learners who are computer literate are not only more likely to be accepted into tertiary education facilities but are also to get employment. This makes it crucial for companies like us to be involved in computer literacy initiatives. Sondolo IT, BOSASA's integrated technology subsidiary, took control of this project and invested substantially into computers and facilities for the school. They’ve also committed to the maintenance of the centre.

  • The iSibonelo High School Computer Centre – This centre is located in KwaMashu, KwaZulu Natal in the historic Sisibonelo High School. This school is known for its high achieving alumni, including past Principal Govan Mbeki, our former president Thabo Mbeki's father, as well as Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development - Jeff Radebe. In its 50 years of existence the school has been a beacon in the struggle to educate the underprivileged. The community computer centre is BOSASA's way of joining that struggle. The centre is equipped with 15 computers as well as the latest software, and is open to learners and the community. We hold the belief that by affording the people of KwaMashu the opportunity to become computer literate, we directly impact their ability to become employed.

BOSASA owes its success to our people and therefore it is our responsibility to give back to the community, in this way we honour the spirit of Ubuntu.
