Gavin Watson

Founder and Creator of the BOSASA Group of Companies

Gavin Watson is an influential and successful businessman who is well-respected and commended for his superior leadership qualities. His prominence as a change catalyst and business man in South Africa is mostly attributed to his significant contribution towards socio-economic development within the country. He has fostered more than 80 local black economic empowered companies into viable service-based entities.

Gavin’s direction and commitment towards equality are a result of his upbringing and childhood experiences. He grew up on a farm near Somerset East in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa and was the oldest of five siblings. Having a preacher as a father, he was taught numerous, valuable life lessons, as well as the correct way to treat others.

His years of consultancy experience and expertise equipped him to function between the crossing point of government, local and international organisations as he does now. Additionally, Gavin gained extensive knowledge pertaining to the leadership, dynamics and operational aspects of both the private and public sector.

Recognising Profitable and Diverse Economic Opportunities

Gavin exercises his key strengths by recognising profitable and diverse economic opportunities, as well as applying practical business approaches. There are several significant principles that he believes to be at the core of his ventures and successful results. These include:
Overcoming obstacles that prevent competitors from easily entering an industry
Serving the best interests of the country
Creating projects that are socio-economically sustainable
Contributing to and ensuring that social responsibility underpins all assignments
Not compromising the environment
Investing in people as the most valuable resource of any enterprise
Thorough skills development and upliftment programmes
Guaranteeing delivery by utilising integrated knowledge management systems

Believing in the rehabilitation and reintegration of youth who are in trouble with the law, Gavin focuses much of his efforts on motivating the children through interactive and developmental programmes. He does this through the national network of BOSASA Youth Development Centres. Additionally, he ensures that the secure care facilities the Group creates are in excellent condition, that the educational modules offered represent his ideals and that every child is provided the best level of secure care. The notion that each person has the ability to succeed is one that Gavin firmly believes in and tries to instil this amongst teams throughout the organisation. With employees having a positive attitude and acceptance towards giving these young offenders a second chance, the youth are inspired to recreate their lives.

The Watson Corporate Academy was also established in association with the BOSASA Group to demonstrate Gavin’s values and philosophies. This training centre supports and facilitates the growth of future leaders, the power they will hold and the responsibilities that will come with it. The programmes are designed to empower the employees of BOSASA IFM and the Group, as well as develop the expansion of their capabilities through active career path development programmes. Continuous assessments, monitoring and improvements are done to ensure that the curriculums remain relevant, detailed and in-depth. At present, the syllabus includes various programmes to accommodate and assist in the essential progress of future and new generation leaders in the dynamic economic environment of South Africa.

"Under the visionary and coaching leadership of Gavin Watson, the entire BOSASA Group of Companies, along with its employees, is guaranteed of a positive and competitively sustainable future."
